Wow, he dares to and I applaud that. The fact that Kim Tae Hee is most probably going through with the role (movie titled 'Quarrel') is something I accept fully and regardless of what other fans would think of her pairing up with actor Seol Gyeong Gu who is 12 years her senior, I think that would make one great talking point for the movie.
i think it's a long time coming that a director would come in to show us a different side of Tae Hee that many don't see in their minds. she's considered as one of the most beautiful actresses in Korea but that's just about it, a beauty with brains + the CF Queen, but the public don't see beyond that. maybe that's because they can't see beyond that in the roles that she has played. so the only way is for her to take up an unexpected role, not the role of which can seal further her status as a 'star' but most importantly her status as an 'actress' which pple never think much of.
and to think that the director of the movie is one who's won much critical acclaim, the recent being the 2006 SBS drama 'Alone In Love' which tackles a divorced couple who still very much love each other. the common thing it has with this movie KTH is in is that the female lead (Son Ye Jin) is 12 years younger than the male lead (Gam Woo Sung) and they pulled that off. come to think of it, SYJ has been paired a lot with much much older guys, she's younger than KTH and i always find it admirable of her to go for the challenges to take up roles which are older than her (she's only still 25 this year btw). maybe in the looks department, SYJ doesn't get mentioned much compared to KTH however, she definitely gets more recognition than KTH does in the acting department plus she's applauded for her maturity in handling roles. i think that's what KTH needs to show to the rest. so in this new movie role, i expect her to put her looks at the backseat and show us all what she's capable of as an actress. i never doubted her acting abilities, i think the same goes for the director and so that's why he wants to focus on that aspect, and hopefully the viewers when they watch the role, they don't see KTH the beauty with brains but rather they see the character she plays and gets engaged in it.
KTH said before that her looks and because she graduated frm a top university, it could be more of a disadvantage for her as well if she wants to develop further as an actress, because of that, pple always see her in one image or she always gets offered the serious kinda roles, i think that reason is also partly why she & her management accepted the role in Quarrel just as they got the scenario/script of it. it's got a good director (check), the good actor (check), a different role (check), a different genre for her (check) and so on. as such Tae Hee fans, she's in very good hands. Tae Hee is already a star in her own right and nothing can change that, so now is the time for her to establish herself in her career as an actress.
The director also said, "Please expect her natural appearance" and "It is a director's role to draw out good acting from a good actor" in association with the acting ability of Kim Tae Hee.
Tae Hee has received more criticisms for her acting than good reviews about it but it seems most directors don't quite agree with those criticisms from the media and the general public/netizens. i think pple usually expect a lot frm her cause they would want her acting to be on par with her beauty. i hope the director will be able to draw out the good acting frm Tae Hee, i am definitely excited to see her transformation in Quarrel. expect a Tae Hee movie out end of 2007.
as you can see, i'm super excited but i just don't know where to share my excitement lol, so i'll just blog. i'm always waiting for Tae Hee to find a director who could help her unleash her potential further, could director Han be the one? we'll just have to wait and see.

Bravo. I hope you're correct, as I'm as excited about this collaboration as well. KTH does have an enormous amount of potential. She's already demonstrated that she's unafraid to tackle a role. Do you remember the behind the scenes in Love Story In Harvard where she had to redo the "slap-outside-of-the-hospital" after some techinical difficulties? That was very professional.
I saw Seol Gyeong Gu in 2 films, most notably Oasis. It's a wonder how anyone could treat that kind of subject matter, twist it and turn it in to a touching story about simple and basic human needs. It is a triumph in storytelling, although uncomfortable to watch. I found myself actually liking the guy. But that's what a memorable performance can do. I agree that KTH can only improve with that kind of experience around her.
As for the director, I loved Alone In Love. Many viewers take for granted what it takes to sell an idea. It's an effort that involves a great story, great editing, and wonderful performances all funneled into the director's hands. It's his job to make it all seamless and to convey to everyone else in production what they all hope to accomplish. That means there's production schedules, weather, money and other obstacles, aside from getting the best performances out of his actors. It's those performances that are most engaging to the audience.
